Caesars Palace Times Square’s $5 Million Commitment to LGBTQ+ Health

Caesars Palace Times Square, in collaboration with SL Green, Caesars Entertainment, and Roc Nation, has announced a significant $5 million commitment to support the Callen-Lorde Community Health Center if their bid for a casino at 1515 Broadway in Times Square is approved.

Details of the Financial Pledge

The financial pledge will be allocated as follows: $2 million to enhance Callen-Lorde’s existing services in Chelsea and $3 million to establish a new Center for Excellence in Sexual Health. This facility in Hell’s Kitchen aims to improve access to rapid, high-quality HIV and STI care.

Community Response to the Casino Proposal

The casino proposal has sparked controversy within the Broadway and Times Square communities. Organizations such as the Broadway League, TDF, and various theater-related unions oppose the casino due to concerns over increased traffic, congestion, and economic disruption.

However, over 200 organizations and businesses, including local restaurants and Broadway stakeholders, support the Caesars Palace proposal. Notably, the Actors Equity Association has voiced its approval, citing potential job creation and enhanced safety in the area.

Callen-Lorde’s Role in LGBTQ+ Health Care

Callen-Lorde has been a vital part of New York City’s LGBTQ+ health care landscape for over 55 years, serving more than 23,000 patients. Patrick McGovern, CEO of Callen-Lorde, emphasized the importance of this funding for the community’s health and wellbeing.

Innovative Health Solutions

The new 20,000-square-foot facility will feature advanced technology, including check-in kiosks and on-site lab equipment, allowing for rapid STI testing and treatment. This model prioritizes efficiency, confidentiality, and inclusivity, ensuring that those most affected by HIV and STIs receive timely care.

Commitment to Community Safety and Environment

In addition to healthcare initiatives, Caesars Palace Times Square has pledged to enhance public safety, sanitation, and implement a tree-planting program.

Future of Casino Bids in New York

The New York State Gaming Facility Location Board is currently reviewing applications for new casinos across the city, with the state expected to award licenses by the end of 2025.
