Krysten Ritter’s Breakout Year: From Dexter: Resurrection to Jessica Jones Return

Fresh from her appearance at San Diego Comic Con, Krysten Ritter is opening up about her major career moments this year.
Ritter is currently starring as sommelier and serial killer Mia Lapierre, aka Lady Vengeance, in Showtime’s Dexter: Resurrection. On Thursday, she participated in a panel at SDCC alongside co-stars Michael C. Hall, David Zayas, James Remar, Jack Alcott, David Dastmalchian, and executive producers Clyde Phillips and Scott Reynolds. New episodes premiere Friday nights on Paramount+ with Showtime.
She will also reprise the fan-favorite role of Jessica Jones in the Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again (Season 2), currently in production. Ritter first portrayed Jessica Jones in the Netflix series, which ran for three seasons from 2015 to 2019.
Ritter discussed with Deadline her experience juggling two intense roles and her connection with Hall, who reprises Dexter Morgan in the continuation series from Clyde Phillips.
“It really is,” Ritter said about returning as Jessica Jones with ease. “Those characters get into your body and cells, and slipping back into it was easy, exciting, and fun. Everyone was thrilled Jessica was back. Now, there are more layers to explore, which is exciting.”
Earlier this year, fans spotted her in New York, sparking speculation about her MCU return. However, she first landed a major guest arc on Dexter: Resurrection, and months later, her casting in Daredevil: Born Again was confirmed at Disney’s Upfront presentation.
“We wanted to preserve the Jessica Jones announcement for the Upfronts to make it a celebration rather than a leak,” Ritter explained.
Her connection to the Dexter universe came through executive producer Scott Reynolds, who co-showruns the Marvel series. Ritter shared how a casual conversation led to her role in Dexter: Resurrection.

Despite scheduling conflicts with launching her book, Retreat: A Novel, touring, and training for Jessica Jones, Ritter found the role irresistible.
New casting announcements including Peter Dinklage, Uma Thurman, David Dastmalchian, Eric Stonestreet, and Neil Patrick Harris enhanced the season. Their characters featured in the standout Dexter episode, “Call Me Red,” a dinner party of serial killers.
“It was a major career moment for everyone,” Ritter said. “It felt delicious and fun being together. I’m happy with the reaction—it doesn’t always happen.”
Ritter teased more “craziness” to come this season, reflecting on the privilege of playing two complex roles in one year.
“Playing Jessica Jones again is awesome, and creatively, playing both roles back to back has been a dream come true. To have something glamorous and psychotic like Mia, and a complex superhero like Jessica—it’s the best of both worlds.”
