Marianne: Netflix’s Best Hidden Horror Show With a Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score

Netflix may be home to some of the biggest horror shows of the last decade, but one underrated French series stands out as its best hidden gem. With a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score, “Marianne” is a chilling supernatural thriller that proves horror doesn’t always need big budgets or long franchises to make an impact.

Created by Samuel Bodin, Marianne follows Emma Larsimon (Victoire Du Bois), a successful horror author who decides to quit the genre and kill off her most famous character. Her plans unravel when her childhood friend Caroline visits with a terrifying revelation: she believes her mother is actually Marianne, the witch from Emma’s nightmares and books. After Caroline dies by suicide, Emma is forced to return to her hometown to uncover the horrifying truth, facing a sinister evil she thought she left behind.

What makes Marianne so effective is its slow-burn psychological horror, eerie atmosphere, and character-driven storytelling. While it has its share of jump scares, the real terror lies in the mystery, suspense, and emotional depth of its characters. The show keeps viewers hooked with unsettling imagery and dark twists, making it a must-watch for fans of supernatural horror.

Despite rave reviews, Marianne was canceled after just one season in 2019, reportedly due to low viewership. This is a common issue with Netflix, where even highly acclaimed shows can end abruptly if they don’t pull in enough numbers to justify production costs. Though creator Samuel Bodin had plans for multiple seasons, the series remains a single-season miniseries of eight episodes — a complete, haunting story that continues to gain cult status among horror fans.

Five years after its release, Marianne is still one of Netflix’s scariest and most underrated horror shows, perfect for those looking for a fresh and terrifying binge.
