Donald Trump Threatens to Investigate Chris Christie After Harsh Criticism

Donald Trump has once again turned to Truth Social to lash out, this time at former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, after Christie criticized him during an interview on ABC’s This Week. Trump suggested that Christie should be investigated for his role in the infamous Bridgegate scandal, reviving a controversy that nearly derailed Christie’s political career.
Trump wrote on Truth Social, mocking both Christie and ABC News:
“I just watched Sloppy Chris Christie be interviewed on a ratings-challenged show… Can anyone believe anything that Sloppy Chris says? … For the sake of justice, perhaps we should start looking at that very serious situation again? NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW!”
The comments came shortly after the FBI raid on the home of John Bolton, Trump’s former national security adviser and another critic. Both Bolton and Christie were once Trump allies but have since become outspoken opponents.
On This Week, Christie dismissed statements made by Ghislaine Maxwell, who was convicted of sex trafficking. Maxwell had described Trump as “cordial and kind,” but Christie questioned her credibility, saying:
“Why should we believe a damn thing Ghislaine Maxwell has to say about anyone?”
Christie acknowledged he did not believe Trump engaged in anything illegal with Jeffrey Epstein, but emphasized that relying on Maxwell’s words was unreliable at best.
Meanwhile, Christie criticized Trump’s double standard on classified information, noting Trump’s attacks on Bolton while defending himself over his own handling of sensitive documents:

“It’s kind of funny to hear the president talk the way he does about Bolton and classified information, yet when he had the classified information, the same rules didn’t apply.”
Christie further accused Trump of using the Justice Department as a political weapon:
“He told you he was going to do this … and that is what they’re doing.”
The Bridgegate scandal dates back to 2013, when lanes on the George Washington Bridge were closed, allegedly as political retribution against a mayor who refused to endorse Christie. While Christie himself was never indicted, aides including Bridget Anne Kelly were convicted. However, in 2020, the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously overturned Kelly’s conviction, a ruling Trump at the time hailed as Christie’s “complete and total exoneration.”
Now, with Trump threatening to revisit Bridgegate, the clash between the two former allies underscores the deepening divisions within the Republican Party as the 2024 election cycle intensifies.
