‘Emily In Paris’ Creator Darren Star Provides Season 5 Update

Like his heroine, Emily In Paris creator and executive producer Darren Star is currently in Paris, working on the upcoming fifth season of his hit Netflix comedy series starring Lily Collins.

Production Insights

During an interview about the Netflix success of his previous series, Younger, Star provided an update on Emily In Paris. “I think we’ve got a really terrific season coming up,” he said. “We filmed in Rome for the first four weeks, and that was an exciting experience to be there. Now we’re back in Paris; Emily is definitely back in Paris.”

Netflix announced in April that production on Season 5 would start in May — first in Rome and then in Paris — for a 2025 premiere. The streamer confirmed returning cast members, including Season 4 regulars Collins (Emily Cooper), Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu (Sylvie Grateau), Ashley Park (Mindy Chen), Lucas Bravo (Gabriel), Samuel Arnold (Julien), Bruno Gouery (Luc), and William Abadie (Antoine Lambert), along with Lucien Laviscount as Emily’s former boyfriend Alfie, who will be back full-time next season.

Cast Changes

Not returning is Camille Razat, who had been a series regular for the first four seasons as Camille, Emily’s onetime friend and main rival for Gabriel’s heart. “I think her story kind of had a natural finish,” Star said about Razat’s departure.

Late in Season 4, Camille packed up and left Paris after one last attempt at a relationship with Gabriel (Bravo) under false pretenses involving a fake pregnancy.

While Camille may be out of the picture, Emily’s love life is expected to remain complicated in Season 5. After the Season 4 finale saw her happy with Marcello, old flame Gabriel is ready to fight for her. “Her love life is always complicated,” Star noted. “We have Marcello, and Lucas Bravo is going to be back this season, so we have some interesting, surprising developments in terms of her love life.”

Returning Characters and New Developments

Bravo raised questions about his return for Season 5 last fall, expressing frustration and stating that playing Gabriel was “not fun anymore.” Star clarified, “I think it was just a misunderstanding. I think he was never intending not to come back.”

As for Laviscount’s return as a series regular, Star mentioned, “Lucien is basically in every episode this season. He’s terrific, and I’m really happy to see him back this year in a more significant way.”

Upcoming Projects

Under his overall deal at Universal Television, Star sold two high-profile projects earlier this year, both with significant script-to-series commitments. Climbing in Heels, an hourlong adaptation of Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas’ upcoming novel, is set up at Peacock. Uncorked, a half-hour, single-camera dramedy which Star is co-writing with New Amsterdam creator David Schulner, is at Netflix.

He lifted the veil just a bit over Uncorked, whose premise had been kept under wraps beyond the fact that it is set in Napa Valley and has a female lead. “It’s about a brilliant female winemaker who gets a big second chance in life,” Star explained. “So it’s kind of like the wine world, but definitely coming in from a female point of view of a very complicated character.”

Climbing In Heels follows the rise of five ambitious secretaries navigating the glitzy world of 1980s Hollywood while offering a glimpse into the boys-will-be-boys club and the women who wanted a seat at a table where they were expected to serve. There is no talent attached yet, but Star expressed enthusiasm for the strong roles available for actresses.
