Kristin Davis Reflects on the End of And Just Like That and Fans’ Mixed Reactions

Kristin Davis, best known for her role as Charlotte in Sex and the City and its sequel And Just Like That, has opened up about the challenges of processing the show’s ending and the strong, often divided reactions it generated.

The series, which wrapped up after three seasons, revisited Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) and her friends a decade later. While the finale left Carrie single and the rest of the characters in hopeful but open-ended relationships, Davis admitted she’s still grappling with fans’ responses.

Speaking on her podcast Are You a Charlotte?, Davis said, “It’s been very, very weird, the whole trying to come back with this different, similar show… I really think I was naive about how weird that was for people.” She noted that the attempt to balance continuity with change left some viewers struggling with themes of aging, identity, and middle age.

Davis recalled finding comfort in critic Taffy Brodesser-Akner’s description of the series as a “documentary of middle age,” saying the interpretation made her feel “seen.” Still, she admitted that fan backlash — including a trend of “hate-watching” — has been difficult: “My biggest thing is that it’s been very confusing. I’m still confused, and I do not like to be confused. I like to understand things.

Adding to the surprise, Davis revealed she didn’t know And Just Like That was ending until shortly before the finale. Showrunner Michael Patrick King explained that HBO and the creative team chose not to announce the final season earlier, avoiding a “funeral dirge” over the storyline. “Sometimes you take the candy away,” King said, believing the ending will resonate more over time.

Writers Julie Rottenberg and Elisa Zuritsky also acknowledged the challenge of meeting expectations for characters who have been part of fans’ lives for nearly three decades. Davis echoed this sentiment, observing how deeply personal the show has become for audiences.

Despite the mixed reception, Davis emphasized her ongoing bond with Parker and Cynthia Nixon, sharing that the trio remains close friends. For her, the end of the show felt like “walking into your own funeral when you didn’t know it was coming,” but she remains grateful for the journey and the enduring impact of the franchise.
