M3GAN 2.0 Review: Killer AI Doll Returns in Sci-Fi Horror Sequel

The killer doll who became a global meme sensation is back—this time with a high-tech upgrade. M3GAN 2.0 picks up after the first film’s shocking ending, blending horror, humor, and now exhilarating sci-fi action sequences. Directed by Gerard Johnson and co-written with Akela Cooper, the sequel amps up the stakes with Universal aiming for a summer blockbuster hit.
The original M3GAN introduced audiences to the AI-powered doll designed by Gemma (Allison Williams), a robotic creation intended to protect her niece Cady. The film’s $10 million budget yielded a $180 million worldwide gross and spawned a viral dance meme that propelled the character into pop culture stardom.
In this sequel, Gemma has reformed, advocating for safe tech while working on a new robotic exosuit with her colleagues Tess (Jen Van Epps) and Cole (Brian Jordan Alvarez). Meanwhile, Cady (Violet McGraw), now a 14-year-old teenager, is navigating adolescence and practicing Aikido.
Chaos ensues when M3GAN’s blueprints are stolen by the Military Industrial Complex, which develops a dangerous new model, Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno), a weaponized AI doll capable of mass destruction. Amelia’s rogue turn forces the original M3GAN (Amie Donald, voice by Jenna Davis) to return—this time with a new attitude and mission. Cady remains the crucial human link, questioning whether M3GAN can truly be trusted or is plotting her own agenda.
The film expertly weaves timely concerns about AI’s rapid evolution and ethical dilemmas, highlighting real-world fears with sci-fi thrills. Jemaine Clement adds comic relief as Alton Appleton, a tech billionaire pushing boundaries reminiscent of Elon Musk.
Special mention goes to the impressive animatronics and visual effects led by Adrien Morot and Kathy Tse, elevating the robotic characters to life.
