TV and streaming content trends were the highlight at the ninth edition of the Conecta Fiction & Entertainment industry gathering in Cuenca, Spain, which concluded on Thursday.

Industry Leaders Discuss Programming and Future Outlook

Executives from major companies such as Warner Bros. Discovery, The Walt Disney Co., Gaumont Television, Spain’s Atresmedia Group, production giant Banijay, and NBCUniversal Telemundo shared insights on their original programming and the industry’s future.

Indirect References to Trump

Despite the business focus, U.S. President Donald Trump cast a long shadow over the event. During a session titled “Focus Canada: D.E.I. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion,” moderator Marina Mathieu acknowledged the panel’s intent to discuss DEI initiatives without directly targeting Trump, referencing his administration’s stance on such policies.

European Content Ownership Concerns

Later, Isabelle Degeorges, president of Gaumont Television, indirectly referenced Trump while praising France’s regulations that require U.S. and global streamers to invest a minimum of 20% of their net French revenue in European works. She emphasized the importance of owning intellectual property (IP) to maintain cultural identity.

Production Incentives and International Markets

Concerns over Trump’s potential MAGA policies affecting international markets arose during a session on production incentives. Ana Marqués, executive director of the Portugal Film Commission, noted the uncertainty surrounding U.S. tariffs on films made abroad, emphasizing Portugal’s focus on cultural exchange and co-production.

Future of Production and U.S. Relations

Victor Lamadrid, general secretary of the Spain Film Commission, echoed similar sentiments, expressing hope that potential Trump policies wouldn’t negatively impact production. He stated, “We have nothing real at the moment.”

Opportunities Amidst Political Division

In one of the final sessions, Sergio Mendoza, vp of scripted development at NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises, touched on the current political climate in the U.S., suggesting that it opens up opportunities for unique storytelling.
