Simon Cowell and Sofía Vergara Return for America’s Got Talent’s Landmark 20th Season on NBC

Simon Cowell and Sofía Vergara are back for the highly anticipated 20th season of America’s Got Talent (AGT) on NBC, making this a landmark milestone for the popular talent competition series.

In a recent interview with Deadline, both judges shared insights about their experiences and feelings as the new season begins. Cowell admitted he still feels “very nervous before we start filming the first day.” He explained that after the first day of filming, he often thinks, “it’s over,” only to be surprised on day two by acts that make him say, “Oh my God, where did you come from?”

Vergara echoed these sentiments, sharing how, even after six seasons, the judges are “always surprised,” which she finds “super weird” given the show’s long history. Cowell joked about her tenure, saying, “I thought it was six minutes,” prompting laughter from both.

Vergara emphasized the magic of the show, saying, “Magic is magic. You think dancing is dancing. But no, they figure out how to make it feel fresh and new and still wow us.”

Over the years, the rise of social media platforms like TikTok and YouTube has transformed how talent is discovered and showcased. Cowell noted, “One leads to the other,” highlighting how performers often build an audience online before appearing on AGT. He explained, “You’re doing something in your bedroom, and then they come in front of 4,000 people, and it’s completely different.”

Vergara pointed out the difference in audience demographics between social media and traditional TV, stating, “AGT is watched by families. Every time I get approached, it’s a whole family—grandmothers, kids—exposed to an audience they might not get on TikTok.”

Cowell recalled the groundbreaking viral success of Susan Boyle on Britain’s Got Talent as a prime example of social media’s impact. Boyle’s audition amassed 500 million views within 48 hours, a phenomenon that helped sell the show to 30 more countries.

Season 20 also marks the return of Mel B to the judging panel, replacing Heidi Klum. Vergara admitted she was initially “a little worried” about working with Mel B, having not met her in person before. However, Vergara quickly realized Mel B’s experience made her “approachable,” and the transition was seamless.

Cowell described Mel B’s presence as “like sitting next to a firework,” praising her unpredictability and honesty as a judge. Despite occasional differences in opinion between the judges, Cowell believes Mel B’s return has been a positive addition to the show.

America’s Got Talent airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
