Sophie Turner Confirmed as Lara Croft in Prime Video’s Tomb Raider Series

After years of anticipation, Prime Video’s Tomb Raider series is officially heading into production with Sophie Turner cast as the iconic adventurer Lara Croft. The high-profile project, based on the legendary video game franchise, begins filming January 19, 2025, under the creative leadership of Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

Sophie Turner Steps Into Lara Croft’s Boots

Turner, best known for her Emmy-nominated role as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, follows in the footsteps of Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander, both of whom previously brought Croft to life on the big screen. Expressing her excitement, Turner said:
“She’s such an iconic character, who means so much to so many – and I am giving everything I’ve got. They’re massive shoes to fill, but with Phoebe at the helm, we’re all in very safe hands.”

Phoebe Waller-Bridge Leads the Creative Team

Waller-Bridge, acclaimed for Fleabag and Killing Eve, serves as creator, writer, and executive producer, with Chad Hodge joining as co-showrunner. Jonathan Van Tulleken (Shōgun, Dope Thief) will direct and executive-produce. The series comes from Amazon MGM Studios, Story Kitchen, and Crystal Dynamics, the game’s developer.

Waller-Bridge praised the project:
“It’s not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving. Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara. Get your artifacts out… Croft is coming…”

Honoring the Tomb Raider Legacy

The series promises to honor the Tomb Raider legacy while delivering fresh, globe-trotting adventures for fans. Vernon Sanders, Head of Global TV at Prime Video, emphasized:
“Lara Croft is one of the most recognizable video game characters of all time. We are thrilled to have Sophie Turner bring this character to life with courage, strength, and unshakable resolve.”

A New Era for Lara Croft

Turner’s recent credits include the British limited series Joan, the thriller Trust, and the upcoming The Dreadful. With her casting, Prime Video hopes to elevate Tomb Raider into a global franchise, tapping into the legacy of the games while exploring new stories for modern audiences.

Production begins January 19, 2025 — exactly three years after Waller-Bridge was first attached to the project
