Ne Zha 2 Surpasses $2 Billion Globally, Set for U.S. Wide Release with Michelle Yeoh

At the midpoint of 2025, the biggest box office hits in the U.S. include A Minecraft Movie, Lilo & Stitch, and Sinners. However, on the global stage, a Chinese-language animated sequel has taken the spotlight: Ne Zha 2. This film has been dominating multiplexes worldwide for over six months, far outpacing its competition internationally.

Since its January release in China, Ne Zha 2 has surpassed $2 billion at the global box office, joining the ranks of cinematic giants like James Cameron’s Avatar series and the Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame films. The majority of this impressive gross—approximately $1.8 billion—comes from its native Chinese market. It also had a limited release in the U.S. in February, earning an additional $20 million.

The U.S. release is set to expand on August 22, with A24 unveiling an English-language version featuring acclaimed actress Michelle Yeoh, winner of the Best Actress Oscar for Everything Everywhere All at Once.

What is Ne Zha 2 about?

Rooted deeply in Chinese mythology, the Ne Zha franchise centers on the adventures of a child warrior inspired by a Shang Dynasty legend. The original 2019 film followed Ne Zha’s origin story: a demon spirit reincarnated as a human youth who defies a fatal curse and battles gods and monsters. That film ended with Ne Zha and his friend Ao Bing returning to the spirit realm.

In Ne Zha 2, Ne Zha is granted a new human body, but Ao Bing’s return is more complex. Ne Zha invites Ao Bing to share his physical form as they face a series of challenges set by the duplicitous antagonist, Wuliang. Ne Zha must also conceal his demon identity while navigating these trials.

After overcoming numerous obstacles, the two friends regain their separate forms, and a mid-credits scene hints at their next confrontation with Wuliang.

English-Language Cast and Release

So far, Michelle Yeoh is the only confirmed voice cast member for the English dub. Yeoh, known for her groundbreaking Oscar win and roles in animated features like The Tiger’s Apprentice and Minions: The Rise of Gru, expressed excitement about sharing Ne Zha 2 with English-speaking audiences.

A24 is positioning Ne Zha 2 as a major contender in the animation market, offering premium screenings in IMAX, 3D, and large-format theaters across North America.

Awards Prospects and Competition

With the Academy expanding its international membership, Ne Zha 2 stands a strong chance for Oscar recognition, especially given the weaker commercial performance of recent American animated films like Dog Man and Elio.

The film’s main competition may come from Disney’s Zootopia 2, slated for release around Thanksgiving. The original Zootopia grossed over $1 billion worldwide, and anticipation for its sequel is high. However, Ne Zha 2’s global dominance makes it a formidable contender.
