Scrubs Revival Returns to ABC for 2025-26 Season with Original Stars Zach Braff, Donald Faison, and Sarah Chalke

The doctors are back. Fifteen years after its series finale, Scrubs is returning to ABC’s primetime lineup for the 2025-26 season, with at least three original stars confirmed to come back. Zach Braff, Donald Faison, and Sarah Chalke have announced their involvement in the revival, led creatively by series creator Bill Lawrence.

“Scrubs means so very much to me,” said the Ted Lasso and Shrinking executive producer. “So excited for the chance to get the band back together.”

Here’s everything you need to know about the second act of Scrubs.

What’s Scrubs about?

If you missed the original 2001-10 run, Scrubs followed the lives of a group of novice doctors at Sacred Heart Hospital in the busy California town of San DiFrangeles. Braff starred as physician J.D. Dorian, while Faison played his best friend and surgical superstar, Christopher Turk.

Though the two lived as heterosexual life partners resembling Jay and Silent Bob, they both formed romantic relationships with fellow doctors. J.D. had an on-again, off-again relationship with Chalke’s Elliott Reid, which led to marriage and children. Turk married head nurse Carla Espinosa (played by Judy Reyes) and also started a family.

Beyond the main four, Scrubs featured beloved supporting characters like Dr. Cox (John C. McGinley), the prankster janitor Neil Flynn, and boss Bob Kelso (Ken Jenkins). The show also hosted many notable guest stars like Heather Graham, Michael J. Fox, Ryan Reynolds, and Elizabeth Banks over its nine seasons. (The final season was a semi-spin-off set in a medical school.)

Who else is returning?

Aside from Braff, Faison, and Chalke, ABC hasn’t confirmed other original cast members yet. However, Judy Reyes as Carla seems a likely returnee, given her strong relationship with Turk.

According to Variety, the revival is set in the present day at Sacred Heart. The official logline states: “J.D. and Turk scrub in together for the first time in a long time. Medicine has changed, interns have changed, but their bromance has stood the test of time. Characters new and old navigate Sacred Heart with laughter, heart, and some surprises.”

How did Scrubs fare with awards?

During its original run, Scrubs earned 17 Emmy nominations, including Best Comedy Series nods in 2005 and 2006 and a Best Comedy Actor nomination for Braff in 2005. It won two Emmys: for multi-picture editing (2005) and sound mixing (2007).

Braff was nominated for three Golden Globes between 2005 and 2007, and the show was a three-time PGA Awards nominee between 2004 and 2006.

When can I watch it?

No official premiere date has been announced, but Scrubs is expected to return in 2026. It’s one of two new shows ABC is adding for the upcoming TV season, alongside 9-1-1: Nashville, the latest from Ryan Murphy’s emergency responder franchise. Though Nashville is far from San DiFrangeles, a crossover event could be possible.
