Shrinking Season 2 Aims for Emmy Glory After Slow Start

After receiving modest recognition for its first season, Shrinking on Apple TV+ is now poised for major success at the 2025 Emmy Awards. The show initially scored just two nominations in 2023—for Jason Segel (Best Comedy Actor) and Jessica Williams (Best Comedy Supporting Actress)—but this year, predictions suggest a far more robust awards haul.

Sometimes, television series need time to be discovered, especially in the crowded era of Peak TV. Historical examples like Fleabag, Succession, and Will & Grace demonstrate how shows can build momentum over time. With a production break following the Hollywood strikes, viewers and Emmy voters had a chance to catch up on Shrinking, possibly setting the stage for its breakout year.
Gold Derby currently ranks Shrinking in sixth place for a nomination in the Best Comedy Series category, which features eight slots this year. Behind the scenes, the producing team—previously recognized for Ted Lasso and Scrubs—has been campaigning actively through various FYC (For Your Consideration) events, including exclusive set visits for Emmy voters.
Three actors from the ensemble are currently projected to earn nominations. Jessica Williams stands in fifth place for Best Comedy Supporting Actress, while Harrison Ford and Michael Urie are predicted to be nominated in the Best Comedy Supporting Actor category. Notably, Urie recently won a Critics Choice Award for his role as Brian, Jimmy’s over-the-top best friend.
While Jason Segel (in sixth place) faces stiff competition for a Best Comedy Actor nomination, Brett Goldstein is also under consideration. The ensemble includes Luke Tennie, Lukita Maxwell, Christa Miller, and Ted McGinley—adding further strength to the show’s cast lineup.
On the creative side, showrunner Bill Lawrence has submitted only one episode for Best Comedy Writing—Season 2’s finale, “The Last Thanksgiving”—to concentrate votes and avoid splitting them. Lawrence is joined on the ballot by co-writers Brett Goldstein and Neil Goldman.

Directorial efforts also stand out. Submissions include:

Randall Keenan Winston for “Jimmying”

-
Zach Braff for “Made You Look”
-
James Ponsoldt for “Last Drink”
-
Lawrence again for “The Last Thanksgiving”
Although this would mark the first Emmy directing nominations for most of the team, Braff has prior recognition for Ted Lasso.
Below-the-line categories may see a strong showing as well. Submissions have been made for casting, cinematography, costumes, hair, makeup, music, editing, production design, and sound. Production designer Cabot McMullen and set decorator Andrea Mae Fenton even conducted a unique Emmy voter tour of the show’s therapy office sets—leaving a notable impression.
As Shrinking films Season 3, Lawrence has hinted that the storyline will pivot toward personal growth and forward motion. “This show is about being stuck,” he explained. “We’re telling a three-season story arc. If it goes longer, it has to evolve. Hopefully, audiences will see real progression.”
Both seasons of Shrinking are currently streaming on Apple TV+.
