Squid Game Season 3: Everything You Need to Know Before the Final Round

Netflix’s record-breaking Korean thriller, Squid Game, returns for its third and final season on June 27, 2025. The global phenomenon continues the story of Seong Gi-hun (Player 456), who reenters the deadly competition after being captured by the enigmatic Front Man. The recently released trailer during Netflix’s Tudum 2025 event hints at brutal new games, dark twists, and Gi-hun’s emotional descent as the high-stakes battle unfolds.

Recap: What Happened in Season 2?

Season 2 picks up two years after the first season’s devastating conclusion. Gi-hun, the sole survivor of the original game, is traumatized by his win and determined to dismantle the deadly operation. Despite his vow to stop the game, he is drawn back in when he confronts the Front Man and agrees to join as a player once again.

Unbeknownst to Gi-hun, the Front Man is Hwang In-ho, brother of detective Jun-ho, who has been investigating the sinister games. In-ho infiltrates the game under a new identity and manipulates outcomes from within. This season introduces a voting system allowing players to choose whether to continue playing or walk away with a portion of the prize money — a moral dilemma that tests alliances and human nature.

As the violence escalates, Gi-hun and his allies rebel against the pink-clad guards, only to be captured. In a heart-wrenching scene, his closest friend Jung-bae is executed before him, pushing Gi-hun to the edge of despair.

Meanwhile, Jun-ho searches for the secret island, aided by Captain Park — unaware that Park is a traitor. Another subplot follows No-eul, a North Korean defector and conflicted guard, who shows glimpses of compassion by secretly helping players. Her role could become pivotal in the battle to end the games from within.

What to Expect in Season 3

Following the failed rebellion and personal losses, Gi-hun must find a new strategy to bring down the organization. Season 3 promises even more intense challenges, complex moral choices, and the return of the sadistic VIPs. The official synopsis teases:

“A failed rebellion, the death of a friend, and a secret betrayal. As Gi-hun reaches his lowest point, the Squid Game continues with deadlier rounds and deeper psychological warfare. In-ho resumes his role as Front Man, the VIPs return, and Jun-ho’s search leads to dangerous revelations.”

Behind the Scenes: Who’s Making Season 3?

As with previous seasons, Hwang Dong-hyuk returns as the writer and director. Notably, Seasons 2 and 3 were filmed back-to-back, allowing for the swift return of the final chapter in mid-2025.

When and Where to Watch

All six episodes of Squid Game Season 3 will be released globally on Netflix on June 27, 2025.

Is This the End of Squid Game?

According to director Hwang, Season 3 will conclude the current arc of Squid Game. However, Netflix is reportedly developing an English-language adaptation directed by David Fincher, alongside a second season of the reality spinoff Squid Game: The Challenge.
