The Traitors Season 3: Behind Alan Cumming’s Iconic Costumes

When The Traitors launched, viewers were drawn in by the mystery, suspense, and strategy. But by Season 3, another unexpected element was stealing the spotlight: Alan Cumming’s wardrobe. Styled by visionary costume designer Sam Spector, the host’s outfits evolved into an essential part of the show’s identity—infused with flair, symbolism, and fearless gender expression.
Spector, known for his gender-fluid design approach and creative fusion of historical references with modern aesthetics, has elevated The Traitors beyond typical reality television. His standout looks for Cumming in Season 3 helped the show win three Emmy Awards across casting, competition programming, and hosting. Now, Spector is eyeing his own recognition, submitting the episode “Til Death Us Do Part” for Emmy consideration in the Best Costumes for Variety, Nonfiction, or Reality Programming category.
Below, Spector shares the creative inspiration behind five of the most unforgettable looks from Season 3.
1. Turquoise Triumph – Glamorous Armor with Camp Appeal
An evolution of Cumming’s entrance on horseback, the turquoise kilt costume features a custom-made chest piece inspired by medieval armor—blended with a “campy glam” aesthetic. “I wanted something bold, regal, and unmistakably Alan,” says Spector. The look merges drama and elegance in a uniquely theatrical way.
2. Wedding Tuxedo Dress – A Bold Statement on Gender Fluidity
In a wedding-themed episode, Spector crafted a tuxedo dress hybrid that redefined traditional gender roles. Half masculine suit, half draped bridal gown, the outfit was enhanced by floral appliqué created in collaboration with Zero Waste Daniel, using fully recycled materials. “We wanted something both shocking and beautiful,” Spector explains.

3. Eye See You – Dollhouse-Inspired Couture
Drawing inspiration from the episode’s creepy dollhouse mission, Spector took a Paul Smith baby-blue suit and altered the sleeves to resemble a vintage doll dress. The pocket square? A miniature baby doll head, bedazzled with red rhinestones in its eyes. “It’s horror meets high fashion,” says the designer.
4. Great Scots! – Mary Queen of Scots Reimagined
For one regal moment, Cumming channels Mary Queen of Scots, clad in royal blue velvet and a golden corset. “We hadn’t tapped into that historical reference yet,” Spector recalls. Collaborating with designer Michael Ngo, the team delivered a punk-goth-glam tribute to Scottish history—updated with theatrical edge.
5. The Queen’s Gambit – A Chessboard Fantasy
Filmed during a challenge staged on a life-sized chessboard, this black-and-white ensemble played with bold patterns and proportion. The crown jewel? A headpiece constructed entirely out of real chess pieces. “We wanted something surreal and sculptural to match the game’s psychological tone,” Spector says.
Looking Ahead: Season 4 Promises Even More Drama
Now filming Season 4 in Scotland, Spector teased that the wardrobe this time will go even further. “Each season we push it,” he told the press. “But this one is by far the most dramatic in terms of costume. We’re diving deep into full custom design.”
As The Traitors continues to push the boundaries of reality television, Alan Cumming’s ever-evolving style, guided by Spector’s daring vision, remains one of its most defining features.
All three seasons of The Traitors are streaming now on Peacock, with Season 4 expected in 2026
