Jurassic World Rebirth: Franchise’s Latest Film Review

The highly anticipated film, Jurassic World Rebirth, is set to release on July 2, marking a significant return to the beloved franchise. This article delves into the film’s critical reception and its place within the Jurassic series.
‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ Narrowly Avoids Earning the Franchise’s Lowest Rotten Tomatoes Score
Life has once again found a way with Jurassic World Rebirth, set to hit theaters on July 2, just in time for the upcoming holiday. This film marks a return for the long-running dinosaur-infested franchise for the first time since 2022, when Jurassic World Dominion concluded the modern trilogy with a cool $1 billion at the box office, despite receiving disastrous reviews compared to what Steven Spielberg‘s groundbreaking original had become. Fortunately, there are no genetically modified locusts this time around, but critics believe that Universal was so preoccupied with whether or not they could continue the story that they didn’t stop to think if they should. As of now, Gareth Edwards‘s latest installment holds an unfavorable 57% score on Rotten Tomatoes, yet it is not particularly close to the worst the series has seen.

Collider’s Aidan Kelley wasn’t particularly impressed with the film, giving it a 5/10 in his review. Although he noted there’s plenty to enjoy for fans seeking dinosaur action and that Rebirth takes positive steps toward recreating the look and feel of the original, he felt it unnecessary to revisit the Jurassic franchise. “While it has standout moments that will make fans happier than a T. rex in a goat farm, Jurassic World Rebirth never really feels like it justifies its existence, possibly because the Jurassic franchise isn’t one that’s ripe for worldbuilding and innovation.” He also praised the star-studded cast, including Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and especially Mahershala Ali.
What Is ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ About?
Set five years after Dominion, when the dinosaurs have relocated to tropical parts of the Earth, Rebirth follows Zora Bennett (Johansson), a covert ops specialist who joins a team, including paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis (Bailey) and leader Duncan Kincaid (Ali), on a mission to a remote research facility from the original Jurassic Park. Their goal is to collect DNA from the beasts in the area, which is crucial for a potential medical breakthrough that could be invaluable to humanity. However, everything changes when they become stranded on the island alongside a family whose boat trip went horrifically off course. Worse yet, they are all trapped with mutated dinosaurs from failed experiments that have learned to thrive as apex predators. Everyone must work together to survive, uncover the facility’s secrets, and escape with their lives against all odds.
