Cierra Ortega Apologizes for Racial Slur After Removal from Love Island USA

Cierra Ortega has spoken out for the first time following her removal from Love Island USA.

On the July 6 episode of the Peacock reality dating show, it was announced that Cierra was removed from the villa after a resurfaced social media post showed her using a racial slur.

In a new Instagram video posted on July 9, Cierra addressed the controversy. “Now that I’ve been back in the U.S. for about 48 hours and had the chance to process,” she said, “I feel ready to speak without being overly emotional because I am not the victim here.”

She acknowledged her use of a racial slur toward the Asian community, stating, “While in the villa, some posts from my past resurfaced where I naively used an incredibly offensive and derogatory term. I want to sincerely apologize to anyone I hurt, especially the Asian community—I am deeply sorry.”

Cierra admitted she was unaware of the word’s harmful history and impact. “I had no idea it carried that much pain or harm, or the history behind it; otherwise, I never would have used it. I had no ill intention, but that’s no excuse—intent does not excuse ignorance.”

She took full accountability for the post, calling it a “true learning moment.” She explained that she only realized it was a slur in 2024 when a follower reached out to correct her. After that, she deleted the post and removed the word from her vocabulary, emphasizing she has grown since then.

Cierra also expressed understanding of Peacock’s decision to remove her from the show. “I completely agree with the network’s decision. This was a serious mistake that deserved punishment, and I have received it.”

In an Instagram Story statement, she affirmed, “I do not and have never condoned racism or the repression of any cultural group. I would never intentionally use any word to tear down a culture or community.”

She added, “I didn’t fully understand the word’s meaning or the pain it carries until I was called out. I was ashamed and committed to never repeating that mistake. I know an apology means little without accountability and change, and that is what I’ve been striving for since.”

Cierra concluded with a message of hope: “While I had no ill intent, I understand impact matters more than intent. I don’t expect forgiveness overnight but hope to show I’m more than this mistake or a reality show character. I’m someone trying to spread love and light, even when I falter.”

She described her time on Love Island USA as “magical” and said she cherishes the memories and friendships formed. “Though heartbroken my journey ended early, I accept consequences are deserved. Once again, to the Asian community, I am truly sorry for the harm caused. With love and humility, Cierra.”

Following her exit, Cierra’s parents also released a statement.
