Jamal Roberts: The Inspiring American Idol Winner Changing the Music Scene
“It’s slowly but surely sinking in,” says Jamal Roberts, the 27-year-old American Idol winner from Meridian, Mississippi. On May 18, Roberts emerged victorious in the Season 23 finale of ABC’s iconic singing competition, triumphing over finalists John Foster and Breanna Nix.
“I’m still in shock. I’m still amazed,” Roberts shares, reflecting on the overwhelming support he’s received. “My big dream is no longer a dream — it’s now a reality.”
Roberts had been following American Idol for years despite his commitments as a “church kid,” often missing episodes due to Sunday services but always catching up later. This dedication helped him understand what it takes to succeed on the show.
“I watched a couple of seasons,” Roberts told Gold Derby. “I knew the rundown — the importance of making right song choices and delivering every performance with passion.”
His thoughtful approach paid off. Roberts captivated audiences throughout the season, culminating in the success of his first single “Heal,” which soared to number one on iTunes. Reflecting on this milestone, he said, “It was amazing. I just didn’t expect it. This is my first time being number one.”
Roberts attributes his success to his deep connection with lyrics. “I’m a lyric person,” he explains. “If the lyrics speak to me and I can insert myself in a song in any way, then that’s the song for me. Whether it reflects my past, future, or faith, I create a new meaning with the song.”
Though “Heal” is a soulful track, Roberts embraces all musical genres, confident that his emotional delivery will connect with listeners across styles.
Challenges and Mentorship on American Idol
Roberts recalls the Disneyland portion of the competition as one of the toughest experiences. “Having my kids there, I wanted to celebrate with them, but we had to record 24/7 and learn four new songs I didn’t know. I was freaking out,” he admits.
Mentorship played a vital role in his journey, especially guidance from Fantasia, who encouraged him to remain authentic. “She told me, ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,’ and to stay true to myself and my music,” Roberts said.
The Moment of Victory
In the finale, Roberts waited anxiously with fellow finalist John Foster. “Nothing went through my head except, ‘Ryan is taking too long calling the name,’” he laughs.
Speculation about a leaked result was denied by Roberts, who said he didn’t notice anything unusual.
Future Plans and Giving Back
Roberts has exciting plans to collaborate with Jelly Roll, confirming they are already working together.
Despite his success, Roberts remains grounded, returning to Meridian to encourage his former students at Crestwood Elementary. “I’m proud of them and their accomplishments,” he shared.
American Idol will return for Season 24 in 2026, with judges Carrie Underwood, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan yet to be confirmed.
