Billy Joel Misses HBO Documentary Premiere Due to Illness, But Film Shines at Tribeca Festival

Legendary singer-songwriter Billy Joel was absent from the world premiere of his HBO documentary Billy Joel: And So It Goes, which opened the Tribeca Festival this Wednesday night at NYC’s Beacon Theatre. Despite his absence, Joel’s wit made an appearance.

“Billy wishes he were here,” said director Susan Lacy, who co-produced the two-part film with Jessica Levin. “He said, ‘Getting old sucks, but it’s still preferable to getting cremated.’”

Introduced by Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal, the documentary paints an intimate portrait of the New York State of Mind icon, tracing his rise from a troubled youth on Long Island to international stardom.

A Troubled Past and Musical Resilience

The film explores Joel’s early days—his first band at 14, a rocky romance with Elizabeth Weber (who later became his manager), a suicide attempt, and a slow climb through a skeptical music industry. It also touches on his alienation in California and frequent frustrations with the business side of music.

One powerful thread in the documentary is Joel’s family trauma: an abusive, absent father and a possibly bipolar, alcoholic mother who nevertheless ensured he got his piano lessons. These struggles deeply influenced his songwriting, which ultimately earned him comparisons (sometimes unwanted) to Elton John.

Rise to Stardom

Returning to New York, Joel formed his classic band and connected with producer Phil Ramone, leading to the breakthrough 1977 album The Stranger. From there, Joel rocketed into full-blown stardom, with hits like Just the Way You Are, Piano Man, and New York State of Mind. The film also highlights tributes from Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, and Nas, all praising Joel’s songwriting and emotional resonance.

🎵 Piano Man remains one of the most iconic storytelling songs in modern music, capturing everyday life with raw honesty—a standout in the world of foreign series soundtracks and nostalgic Americana.

Exclusive Access and Production Details

The HBO Original, premiering in July, includes never-before-seen footage, rare performances, home movies, and deeply personal interviews. It’s a Pentimento Production in association with Hazy Mills and Playtone Productions, with executive producers including Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman, and Sean Hayes.

Billy Joel’s Health Update

Joel, 75, recently postponed his tour following a diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). This condition—triggered by an onstage fall—has affected his vision, balance, and hearing. His wife, Alexis Roderick, shared that the family remains “hopeful for his recovery” and thanked fans for their support.

Despite health setbacks, fans can look forward to Joel’s powerful return. “He will be back,” assured director Susan Lacy.
