Crunchyroll Unveils Frieren Season 2 and Gachiakuta at Anime Expo 2025

Crunchyroll has released a new teaser trailer for Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 2 and premiered the highly anticipated anime Gachiakuta during Anime Expo 2025.
Yuichiro Fukushi, producer of Frieren, confirmed that production for Season 2 is currently underway, with Tomoya Kitagawa returning as director. The second season is scheduled to debut in January 2026. During the event, Fukushi was joined by Chiaki Kobayashi (voice of Stark) and composer Evan Call. Kobayashi performed a live reading from Episode 5 of the first season, while Call offered fans a behind-the-scenes look at his music composition process, including a live performance.
Reflecting on the success of Season 1, Fukushi described the creation of its 28 episodes as a “huge challenge,” highlighting the unusually large volume compared to most anime seasons. “Every story was so heartwarming that I wanted to devote as many resources as possible,” he said.
Evan Call shared insights into his creative approach to scoring the anime. “I didn’t want the music to just be in the background,” he noted. “I envisioned it as an additional character, reflecting the world’s emotional tone.” Drawing from his bluegrass roots, Call blended folk music influences into the soundtrack to match the anime’s sentimental and adventurous themes.
Frieren follows an elven mage on a journey to the resting place of a former comrade, years after their party defeated the Demon King, emphasizing the emotional story of “the adventure after the adventure.”
The panel also featured the premiere of Gachiakuta, an action-packed shonen series set in a trashpunk dystopia. The story centers around a youth from the floating city’s slums, who is wrongfully accused of murder and cast into a massive dumping ground, where he teams up with a group of “Cleaners” to battle mutated trash monsters.

Lastly, it was announced that The Apothecary Diaries will receive a sequel, following the conclusion of its second season. The series tells the tale of a young woman navigating palace politics using her knowledge of medicine and poisons.
