Andrew Cuomo Runs as Independent After Losing NYC Democratic Mayoral Primary to Zohran Mamdani

Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has conceded defeat in the NYC Democratic mayoral primary, where he was unexpectedly bested by political newcomer Zohran Mamdani, who energized a diverse, young electorate to win the party’s nomination for the November 4 election.

Following his late June loss, Cuomo praised Mamdani for running a “really smart and good and impactful campaign.” Yet, in a recent video posted on X, Cuomo announced he will run as an independent candidate, criticizing Mamdani’s platform as “slick slogans, but no real solutions.” He vowed to hit the streets daily, engaging with New Yorkers to earn their votes over the coming months.

Mamdani’s Upset Victory and Platform

Mamdani, a self-declared Democratic socialist and state assemblyman, campaigned on issues of affordability, advocating for a rent freeze and city-owned grocery stores. His campaign combined social and traditional media, positioning himself against the Democratic establishment represented by Cuomo.

Cuomo is attempting a political comeback following his resignation as governor amid sexual harassment allegations—claims he denied and regretted stepping down over.

Background and Controversies

The 33-year-old Ugandan-born Queens lawmaker, son of filmmaker Mira Nair and political scientist Mahmood Mamdani, has taken bold positions including opposition to ICE deportations and criticism of Israel during the Gaza conflict. His comments around the term intifada have sparked controversy, although he has condemned antisemitism and urged focus on this issue.

President Donald Trump responded to Mamdani’s stance on ICE by saying, “Well then, we’ll have to arrest him.”

The Stakes

Senator Bernie Sanders called the race “an election of national significance,” warning that billionaires will spend heavily to defeat Mamdani and framing the choice as between “a strong progressive working class movement” and “oligarchy & authoritarianism.”

Cuomo’s campaign video emphasized pragmatic city issues like lower rent, safer streets, affordable child care, and home ownership, touting his experience and readiness to face opposition.

Mamdani’s campaign is currently raising funds off Cuomo’s announcement, framing Cuomo as running to “repair his soiled reputation” and protect billionaire donors.
