The Last of Us Season 3 Will Be a ‘Water Season’ Centered on Abby’s Journey

During a special Emmy For Your Consideration event held by HBO Max, The Last of Us co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann offered fans a first look at what to expect from Season 3 — including key changes in tone, environment, and character focus.
While discussing the behind-the-scenes evolution of the show, Druckmann shared, “It’s more of a water season than a fire season,” alluding to a shift in the visual and thematic palette of the upcoming episodes. Mazin confirmed the sentiment, saying, “It’s a wetter season than a hotter season,” signaling that Season 3 may explore new geographical settings and emotional landscapes.
The creators participated in two panels at the event. The first panel featured key creatives such as cinematographer Ksenia Sereda, costume designer Ann Foley, editor Timothy Good, composer David Fleming, production designer Don Macaulay, and VFX supervisor Alex Wang. Later, a second panel included cast members Bella Ramsey, Isabela Merced, Gabriel Luna, Young Mazino, and virtually, Kaitlyn Dever, who is currently working on another project in Australia. Actor and executive producer Rob McElhenney served as the moderator.
The event confirmed long-held fan speculation: Season 3 will prominently feature Abby, portrayed by Kaitlyn Dever, who joins the cast in a controversial yet pivotal role. Abby’s introduction follows the shocking narrative twist in Season 2 — the death of Joel, played by Pedro Pascal — a decision that remains faithful to the original video game.
Druckmann expressed gratitude for HBO’s creative support:
“They’ve leaned into what makes the story special. Even with the unconventional structure — like ending Season 2 the way we did — we were given the freedom and time to take big narrative swings.”
Kaitlyn Dever, participating remotely, shared her enthusiasm about joining the franchise:

“It makes me so happy to be a part of this family and to look forward to the journey we have ahead. The controversy surrounding Abby never really concerned me because of how supportive and talented Craig and Neil are. I’ve never felt so carried on a set.”
In a moment of levity, McElhenney jokingly scolded Dever for her character’s actions:
“You killed America’s Sweetheart! You brutally murdered Pedro Pascal with a golf club.”
Mazin responded to the emotional weight of the show’s choices:
“Plot armor is a real problem. If we want audiences to truly feel danger and grief, we need to make bold choices. This show isn’t just about revenge — it’s about grief. And grief only feels real when you lose someone you truly care about.”
With Kaitlyn Dever’s Abby set to take center stage and the promise of a dramatically different setting, The Last of Us Season 3 aims to continue pushing boundaries — both narratively and emotionally — as it explores the complexities of trauma, survival, and humanity.
