Lowkey Films Becomes First Feature Film Production Company to Earn Prestigious B Corp Certification

Lowkey Films, the British indie behind the 2023 feature Kindling, has proudly earned B Corp certification, marking a significant milestone in socially and environmentally conscious filmmaking. Led by Jamie Gamache and Connor O’Hara, Lowkey Films is the first production company working on feature films to receive this prestigious certification, joining the ranks of renowned companies such as Ben & Jerry’s, Patagonia, and The Body Shop.
The rigorous B Corp certification process evaluates a company’s social and environmental performance through the B Impact Assessment, followed by a thorough verification. As part of this, Lowkey Films had to make structural changes, including modifying their Articles of Association to prioritize the interests of all stakeholders, not just shareholders.
Gamache explained the extensive requirements: “We track and offset our carbon footprint annually and maintain inclusive policies such as a breastfeeding policy in the office—practices that significantly improve conditions for our staff and crew.”
Commitment to Sustainable and Ethical Film Production
Gamache and O’Hara emphasized that the certification will influence not only their business practices but also their creative production approach. They hope to inspire other production companies to abandon the harmful “Kubrickian” culture of “work until you drop,” promoting instead sustainable workflows and work-life balance.
O’Hara remarked, “Sustainability is not only about the environment but also about people. We ensure shoots, like a three-month production, are safe, well-planned, and considerate of everyone involved.”
Growing Film Slate and Upcoming Projects
Lowkey Films currently operates with a core team of four, scaling up with freelancers for projects across film, documentaries, commercials, and music. Their recent projects include a live music collaboration with Dua Lipa and the feature drama Salvable, starring Toby Kebbell and Shia LaBeouf, releasing soon in the UK.

“Kindling put us on the map,” said O’Hara. The company has three feature films scheduled to shoot in the next 18 months, alongside a documentary slate and a TV documentary series.
One highly anticipated project is Arctic Skies, a sci-fi thriller starring Morfydd Clark and Ariyon Bakare. Inspired by a well-documented UFO encounter, the film follows a cargo plane crew targeted by mysterious forces over the Arctic Circle. Production will take place at Steven Knight’s Digbeth Loc Studios in Birmingham.
Recognition and International Ambitions
Next month, Lowkey Films will complete production on a short horror film commissioned by No Drama, a development initiative by Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions, Universal, and TIFF. This initiative supports filmmakers exploring horror across cultures and societies. Lowkey Films is the only UK team selected for this prestigious project, which will premiere at TIFF 2025.
O’Hara expressed pride in the selection: “We’re working with director Charlie Dennis on a horror project examining the UK class system, set in Birmingham. After finishing, we’ll be flying to TIFF.
