Strange New Worlds to End with Season 5 on Paramount+

Paramount+ has officially renewed Star Trek: Strange New Worlds for a fifth and final season. Unlike previous ten-episode seasons, this concluding chapter will consist of just six episodes.

According to executive producers Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers, and Alex Kurtzman, the show set out from the beginning to uphold the ideals of Star Trek: limitless curiosity, optimism, and a belief in a better future. “We’re deeply grateful to Paramount+ for the chance to complete our five-season mission,” they said in a statement. “To the fans who joined us—thank you.”

The announcement comes ahead of the highly anticipated premiere of season three on Thursday, July 17. While the final season is now confirmed, fans still have seasons three and four to enjoy—each with ten episodes. Season four is currently in production, with season five expected to begin filming later this year. Although no official release dates have been announced, the final season will likely air in 2027 or 2028.

As a prequel to The Original Series, Strange New Worlds was always expected to lead into that timeline. With the show now ending in season five, that transition is presumed to be part of the final narrative arc. Speaking to Collider, Goldsman hinted that if given creative freedom, the team plans to delve into the TOS era directly.

This news comes during a period of financial tightening at Paramount Global, which recently announced plans to reduce its U.S. workforce by 15 percent. Despite the economic challenges, Strange New Worlds has proven to be the most-watched Star Trek series on Paramount+ and earned a Critics Choice nomination for Best Drama in 2023.

However, not all recent Star Trek projects have succeeded. The streaming film Star Trek: Section 31, based on Michelle Yeoh’s Discovery character, was poorly received by both fans and critics.

Looking ahead, Paramount+ is developing another series: Starfleet Academy, led by showrunner Noga Landau. Set in the famed training institution, the series features Holly Hunter as a Starfleet captain and wrapped filming in February. It’s expected to premiere in late 2025 or early 2026.

Meanwhile, season three of Strange New Worlds will continue the storyline from the previous season’s cliffhanger, with the crew facing off against the dangerous alien species, the Gorn. Cast members Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, Ethan Peck, and others return, joined by guest stars including Rhys Darby, Patton Oswalt, and Carol Kane. Paramount+ promises a season filled with adventure, mystery, humor, and emotional depth across various storytelling genres.
