Gears of War: Reloaded Review – A Classic Reborn with Next-Gen Enhancements

The territorial battles between Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo have blurred in recent years. With PlayStation exclusives becoming increasingly available on PCs, and Microsoft continuing to “play nice” by sharing some of their biggest hits, the gaming world is changing fast. The latest release, Gears of War: Reloaded, is arguably the biggest shift yet—offering PlayStation owners the first chance to experience the iconic Gears of War franchise.

This isn’t just a simple port of the award-winning 2006 game. Instead, it has been rebuilt for modern hardware with 4K graphics, a 60fps campaign, 120fps multiplayer, and 7.1 3D Spatial Audio. Visually and technically, it feels like a game made for 2025, breathing new life into one of the most influential shooters in history.

A Legendary Story Revisited

Heavily inspired by James Cameron’s Aliens and Paul Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers, the game takes place on the fictional planet Sera, where humanity is under siege by the fearsome Locust Horde. You step into the boots of Marcus Fenix, joined by his squadmates Dom Santiago, Augustus Cole, and Damon Baird.

The co-op campaign allows for strategic play, but even in single-player mode, the action feels immersive. However, the AI squadmates often need rescuing, creating moments of frustration. The main mission: find the resonator, locate the underground Locust stronghold, and unleash a devastating bomb.

Gameplay and Combat Mechanics

The game spans five acts, with around 7–8 hours of playtime. While shorter than many modern campaigns, it mirrors the structure of titles like Call of Duty, where robust multiplayer justifies the length.

Combat remains addictive thanks to:

  • Innovative cover mechanics still influencing shooters today.

  • A clever reload system where timing your button press boosts your ammo efficiency.

  • A variety of weapons and loadouts including rifles, shotguns, pistols, and grenades.

Although some cover mechanics feel clunky, and occasional glitches appear, the fast-paced action, detailed environments, and immersive sound design make up for these flaws. The musical score further amplifies the intensity of battle.

Multiplayer Enhancements

The Reloaded edition includes all 19 multiplayer maps and 8 PvP modes:

For the first time, cross-play is supported, letting PlayStation and Xbox players unite. On PS5, the DualSense controller adds deeper immersion through adaptive triggers, haptic feedback, and in-game chatter through the speaker.

Impact on the Console Wars

Some may wonder if releasing Gears of War: Reloaded on PlayStation weakens the Xbox brand. However, expanding the reach of the franchise feels like a net positive. With the upcoming Gears of War: E-Day (2026) exclusive to Xbox, Reloaded acts as a powerful reintroduction for new and returning fans alike.

The legacy of Gears of War is still being written, and this release proves that the franchise remains as relevant as ever.
