Trump’s Immigration Raid Response Criticized by John Oliver Amid LA Protests

response to nationwide protests sparked by immigration raids. On HBO’s Last Week Tonight, Oliver criticized the administration’s aggressive tactics and its deployment of troops in Los Angeles.
Oliver began by addressing recent actions by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). “Last weekend, ICE conducted sweeping raids across the country as part of an escalation ordered by Stephen Miller,” Oliver said. “Miller reportedly encouraged targeting places like Home Depot and 7-Eleven, resulting in chaotic and widespread arrests.”

Footage from a Los Angeles news segment revealed Homeland Security agents detaining individuals. One bystander recounted the panic: “My friends yelled ‘ICE, ICE, ICE.’ At first, I thought it was a joke, but then everyone started running.”
Oliver remarked on the disturbing nature of the incident, mocking how the only positive connotation for “ICE” would have been the 2014 ice bucket challenge—a challenge that, he noted, Trump participated in after being nominated by Mike Tyson, Vince McMahon, and Homer Simpson.
He then turned to the protests in Los Angeles that escalated following the raids. In response, Trump deployed thousands of National Guard troops and Marines, stating the move was necessary “to protect federal law enforcement from a violent mob.” Trump further claimed that without such intervention, Los Angeles “would be burning,” referencing previous wildfires in the region.

Oliver responded: “There’s no reason to mention traumatic wildfires during a national crisis. It’s like starting a retirement toast by saying, ‘The next big event is death.’ We all know, but no one wants to hear it.”
California Gov. Gavin Newsom and LA Mayor Karen Bass opposed Trump’s militarized response. “Why send troops when there’s nothing for them to do?” Oliver questioned. “Are they just going to hang out at the Hollywood Walk of Fame?”
While Oliver acknowledged minor vandalism and rock-throwing incidents — including Waymo driverless cars being set ablaze — he emphasized these were isolated and not indicative of the larger protests.
“Burning a driverless car isn’t the same as harming a person — unless we live in the Cars universe,” Oliver quipped, referencing Pixar’s car pope from Cars 2, implying a fictional car-based religion.
Oliver concluded by calling the federal response excessive. “Sixty days of troop deployment at a cost of $134 million is outrageous,” he said. “Usually when we waste that much money, at least one of the Avengers is involved.”
